The third column is the one most comparisons leave out. Subscription and ownership are not measuring the same thing: the subscription price already includes support and content edits, while the ownership price does not. That column assumes a modest three hours of changes a year at typical agency rates, which is a low estimate for most businesses.
Compared like for like, the subscription is cheaper for the first four years and the two are effectively level at five: $8,600 against $9,000. Not the clean win for ownership the first two columns suggest.
So the useful question is not which is cheaper. It is how much your site will need to change, and who is going to do it. Ownership genuinely wins if you need almost nothing done, or you have someone in-house who can handle it. The subscription wins the moment you need support, because it is already paid for.
